Special districts planners with Contra Costa County Public Works, members of the Alamo Municipal Advisory Council, and volunteers from the Rotary Club of Alamo dedicated a handcrafted heart-redwood creek-viewing gazebo, a permeable flagstone walking loop, and a native monarch pollinator meadow on Sunday afternoon at Andrew H. Young Park at 3200 Danville Boulevard (just north of Jackson Way) in downtown Alamo. Named in honor of beloved Alamo community leader Andrew H. Young, the wooded 1.4-acre creekside pocket park provides a tranquil pedestrian sanctuary linking the Danville Boulevard village retail district to the Iron Horse Regional Trail.
Positioned on a natural knoll overlooking the shaded riffles of San Ramon Creek, the new 18-foot octagonal timber gazebo was framed from sustainably harvested Mendocino County heart redwood with copper-shingle roofing, curved contemplation benches, and a zero-threshold bluestone floor accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Two bronze interpretive plaques inside the pavilion recount the history of San Ramon Creek's riparian corridor and Alamo's nineteenth-century walnut and pear orchards.
Winding around the sunny southern clearing, landscape crews replaced invasive ivy and compacted turf with a 650-foot permeable Sonoma fieldstone walking loop bordered by 1,200 drought-tolerant California golden poppies, silver bush lupines, showy milkweed, and toyon shrubs watered by a subterranean weather-sensing drip controller.
The $155,000 pocket-park enhancement was funded jointly through Alamo County Service Area R-7A park reserves approved by the Board of Supervisors and a $35,000 community service grant from the Rotary Club of Alamo. Residents can view Alamo park locations on the Contra Costa County Alamo Parks Portal.
