Danville Town Council Authorizes High-Intensity Flashing Beacons at Five Busy Hartz Avenue Pedestrian Crossings
Downtown pedestrian safety enhancements follow comprehensive traffic study and merchant feedback to improve visibility during autumn evening dining hours.

The Danville Town Council approved a $340,000 public safety allocation on Monday to install rapid rectangular flashing beacons (RRFBs) and illuminated roadway in-pavement markers at five high-volume pedestrian crossings along Hartz Avenue in downtown Danville. The enhancements target busy intersections at Church Street, Prospect Avenue, Linda Mesa Avenue, School Street, and Diablo Road, where foot traffic from diners, boutique shoppers, and Village Theatre patrons peaks during evening hours.
Town Transportation Manager Tai Tseng presented a traffic calming analysis during Monday's municipal council session, noting that while downtown Danville boasts one of the lowest vehicular crash rates in Contra Costa County, pedestrian close-calls have ticked upward as outdoor dining attracts visitors from across the Tri-Valley. The solar-assisted flashing beacons are activated by push-buttons or automated passive thermal sensors, immediately alerting oncoming drivers with amber strobe lights when a pedestrian enters the crosswalk envelope.
Downtown Danville merchants, senior living liaisons, and parent-teacher association leaders spoke warmly in favor of the measure during public testimony. Local business owners emphasized that enhanced pedestrian safety preserves the welcoming, small-town village atmosphere that makes downtown Danville a premier regional dining destination. In addition to the flashing beacons, the town will refresh high-contrast thermoplastic crosswalk striping and install ADA-accessible truncated dome warning pads along every approach curb.
Danville residents, business owners, and visitors can view the complete crosswalk installation schedule, interactive traffic safety maps, and public works project updates online at danville.ca.gov. Inquiries regarding downtown pedestrian enhancements and neighborhood traffic calming may also be directed to the Danville Engineering Division at (925) 314-3310. Public works crews plan to complete electrical and pole installations during off-peak morning hours in November with minimal traffic disruption.
