San Francisco Old Car Picnic Draws Pre-2001 Vintage Vehicles to Golden Gate Park to Benefit Disability Programs
Continuing a neighborhood tradition dating back to 1988, collectors gather at Hellman Hollow on John F. Kennedy Drive with free spectator admission and charity vehicle registration.

hundreds of classic automobiles, vintage station wagons, and preserved twentieth-century trucks lined the grass of Hellman Hollow in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park this weekend for the annual San Francisco Old Car Picnic. Hosted at 800 John F. Kennedy Drive, the beloved autumn gathering welcomed motoring enthusiasts and families from San Francisco, Walnut Creek, Danville, Alamo, and Lafayette until 4:00 PM. San Francisco Recreation and Park Department officials noted that spectator admission remains 100 percent free ($0 entry) for the public.
Founded in 1988 by local automotive historians and neighborhood collectors, the San Francisco Old Car Picnic has grown over nearly four decades into one of Northern California's most eclectic outdoor motoring showcases. Under event rules, participating cars, motorcycles, and utility vehicles must be model year 2001 or older, resulting in a meadow where 1930s pre-war coupes and 1960s American muscle cars park directly beside 1980s Japanese hatchbacks and European touring sedans. Organizers prize everyday survivor vehicles just as highly as concourse-restored classics.
Beyond celebrating automotive design history, every dollar collected from vehicle entry fees at Hellman Hollow directly supports nonprofit vocational, recreational, and independent-living programs for people with developmental disabilities across the Bay Area. Charity board coordinators reported that vehicle registration fees and community raffle contributions routinely raise tens of thousands of dollars each autumn for local adult day programs and inclusive arts workshops. Families picnicking on the meadow lawn enjoyed live acoustic music, vintage bicycles, and conversations with longtime restoration mechanics.
Across Contra Costa and Alameda counties, classic car clubs in Danville, Alamo, Walnut Creek, and Orinda organized morning caravan drives across the Bay Bridge to participate in the Golden Gate Park display. Municipal park commission staff and traffic supervisors coordinated special classic-vehicle entry gates along Transverse Drive and Fulton Street while preserving car-free pedestrian and cycling promenades along eastern John F. Kennedy Drive. Local vocational school instructors also brought automotive technology students to study vintage carburetors and mechanical engineering firsthand.
Visitors and collectors can review Golden Gate Park meadow maps, upcoming autumn charity festivals, and picnic reservation guidelines online at sfrecpark.org. Kennedy Drive may be directed to the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department office at (415) 831-2700 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
