The City of Lafayette Engineering Department reported steady field progress on Friday, October 16, on the BART Bike Station and Pathway Project adjacent to the downtown transit station. Throughout the past week, municipal contractors continued forming concrete curbs, gutters, and accessibility ramps at the east end of the project site while completing asphalt paving across a designated portion of the commuter parking lot. The multimodal capital improvement project is designed to enhance safe bicycle and pedestrian connectivity for Lamorinda commuters traveling toward Walnut Creek, Orinda, and Oakland.

For the upcoming construction week beginning Monday, October 19, crews are scheduled to execute several major structural milestones across the transit corridor. Planned field operations include additional wooden formwork for concrete curbs, gutters, and pedestrian ramps, followed by a specialized slurry cement base pour along the pathway alignment. Contractors will also conduct structural concrete pours for two public art pole foundations, curbs, gutters, and ramps, culminating in the scheduled delivery and crane installation of the primary steel structure for the new BART bike station.

To minimize disruption to surrounding Contra Costa County neighborhoods while keeping the infrastructure schedule on track before winter weather arrives, authorized construction working hours are set from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. Municipal public works officials confirmed that emergency response vehicles will always be provided with unimpeded access through the work zone at all times. Temporary traffic control cones, flaggers, and directional pedestrian signage will remain deployed around the station perimeter during active concrete and steel delivery operations.

Investing in secure bicycle parking and accessible commuter pathways around the Lafayette BART station supports regional climate goals and eases vehicle congestion along Mount Diablo Boulevard and Highway 24. Once completed, the enclosed steel bike station and upgraded pathway will offer cyclists a well-lit, weather-protected facility integrated with public art elements reviewed by city commissions. Local cycling advocates across Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda have long championed safer first-mile and last-mile connections to the regional rail system.

Commuters and Lafayette residents can check weekly engineering updates, capital project budgets, and detour maps on the municipal website at lovelafayette.org. Motorists and cyclists passing through the BART station parking lots between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM are advised to allow extra travel time and observe posted construction safety advisories. Questions regarding the BART Bike Station and Pathway Project may be directed to the Lafayette Engineering and Public Works Department at (925) 284-1968.
