Contra Costa County Public Works Special Districts staff and members of the Alamo Municipal Advisory Council cut the ribbon on Friday morning to reopen the renovated children's play area at Livorna Park at the corner of Livorna Road and Miranda Avenue in Alamo. Financed through County Service Area R-7A park dedication funds, the $315,000 autumn refurbishment replaces worn engineered wood-fiber mulch with 4,800 square feet of seamless, dual-layer poured-in-place EPDM rubber safety surfacing. The cushioned, flush-grade surface allows toddlers, parents with strollers, and children using mobility aids or wheelchairs to navigate directly to every play structure without encountering timber borders or loose wood chips.
Overhead, structural ironworkers erected four tensioned architectural shade sails supported by powder-coated steel columns that block 94 percent of ultraviolet radiation across both the tot-lot (ages 2 to 5) and school-age (ages 5 to 12) climbing decks. Surface thermometer checks conducted by county park inspectors showed the shaded slides and transfer platforms remaining up to 28 degrees cooler during midday sunlight than unshaded playground equipment.
New inclusive play elements installed during the five-week closure include a zero-entry ramped sensory playhouse, a multi-user saucer swing, an molded high-back adaptive harness seat, and ground-level musical chime panels positioned beside the central oak lawn. Irrigation crews also upgraded the adjacent bocce ball court drainage French drains and added a wheelchair-accessible redwood picnic table under the pavilion.
The $315,000 improvement was completed on budget without drawing on general county tax revenues, utilizing local Alamo park maintenance reserves reviewed by the Alamo MAC Parks and Recreation Subcommittee. Families can check Livorna Park gazebo reservation availability, youth soccer field schedules, and upcoming movie-in-the-park dates on the Alamo Parks and Recreation Portal.
