Berkeley’s live theater companies—which have been performing in the city since 1957—are staging four major fall and winter productions through December 2026 while expanding discounted ticket access for students and young adults, according to a seasonal arts guide published by The Daily Californian.
Alongside UC Berkeley’s department of theater, dance, and performance studies, local institutions including Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Shotgun Players, and Berkeley Playhouse have served as an incubator for actors, directors, and Broadway-bound productions such as American Idiot.
Discounted Access for Students and Patrons Under 35
To counter rising living costs where standard tickets often exceed $30, several Berkeley arts organizations offer targeted affordability programs:
- Berkeley Repertory Theatre offers half-price tickets for anyone under age 35 for most performances, plus discounts for educators, Blue Star military members, and UC Berkeley faculty and staff.
- Shotgun Players offers occasional pay-what-you-can previews and package deals for patrons age 25 and under.
- Cal Performances provides 50% off single tickets for UC Berkeley students.
- Berkeley Playhouse offers discounted college student tickets at the door beginning one hour before showtime.
Four Fall and Winter Productions Running Through December
The Daily Californian highlighted four productions across Berkeley stages between late September and December 2026:
- “The Fall Show” at Shotgun Players (Sept. 25 – Nov. 1): An experimental, surrealist production exploring human relationships through movement, music, visual imagery, and theatrical stunts, with post-show audience conversations hosted on Thursdays and Sundays.
- “Liberation” at Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Oct. 23 – Nov. 29): Arriving after its Broadway run, this memory play examines second-wave feminism and generational change, starring Katie Lowes (Scandal, Inventing Anna, Broadway’s Waitress) and Tony Award nominee Mary Gordon Murray.
- “Covenant” at Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Nov. 6 – Dec. 13): A West Coast premiere Southern Gothic drama inspired by the myth of blues musician Robert Johnson.
- “Disney’s Frozen” at Berkeley Playhouse (Nov. 13 – Dec. 23): A family-friendly midwinter stage musical adaptation running through the holiday season.
