Contra Costa County Public Works Special Districts technicians completed an autumn facility and landscape modernization on Friday afternoon at Andrew H. Young Park at 100 Jackson Way near Danville Boulevard in central Alamo. Named in honor of longtime Alamo community leader Andrew H. Young and stewarded under County Service Area R-7A, the oak-shaded neighborhood park serves as a popular gathering spot for elementary school families, weekend birthday picnics, and summer acoustic concerts. Over a three-week maintenance schedule, electrical crews outfitted the central octagonal redwood gazebo with a concealed 1.8-kilowatt rooftop solar array and a 5-kilowatt-hour lithium battery pack that powers warm architectural LED rafters lighting and two 120-volt GFCI sound-system outlets without trenching through mature valley oak root zones.
Around the gazebo patio, carpenters replaced four aging timber tables with heavy-duty recycled-composite redwood picnic tables—including two extended-end wheelchair-accessible tables—set atop newly poured permeable concrete pads. A new frost-resistant stainless-steel drinking fountain with a dog-bowl basin and reusable bottle filler was connected beside the Jackson Way entrance path.
Across the central two-acre turf meadow, irrigation specialists retrofitted thirty-six pop-up rotors with multi-stream, low-precipitation-rate nozzles controlled by an ET-weather-station smart timer that automatically suspends watering whenever autumn or winter rainfall exceeds a quarter inch. Arborists also performed crown-cleaning and weight-reduction pruning on seven heritage valley oaks bordering the northern creek corridor to prevent winter wind limb drop.
The $118,000 park improvement was funded entirely through dedicated CSA R-7A Alamo park maintenance revenues reviewed by the Alamo Municipal Advisory Council Parks and Recreation Subcommittee.
