Contra Costa County Initiates Playground Safety Resurfacing and Accessibility Upgrades at Hemme Station Park in Alamo
Popular community park along Iron Horse Trail to temporarily close play structures for engineered wood fiber replacement and swing improvements.

Contra Costa County Public Works officials announced Wednesday that the active children's play structures and perimeter grounds at Hemme Station Park in Alamo will undergo safety resurfacing and accessibility enhancements beginning Monday, October 26. Situated immediately adjacent to the Iron Horse Regional Trail at the historic corner of Hemme Avenue and Danville Boulevard, the community recreation area serves as an essential gathering spot for Alamo families, local school groups, and regional trail travelers seeking shaded outdoor recreation.
The capital maintenance initiative involves excavating aged ground cushioning beneath the primary multi-level climbing towers, toddler swings, and spiral slides, replacing compacted materials with new high-impact engineered wood fiber certified under American Society for Testing and Materials standards. In addition to ground fall protection replenishment, county contractors will install widened concrete ADA-compliant transition ramps, rebuild protective border timbers, and repaint weather-resistant shade pergolas that shield park seating areas from midday summer heat.
County park administrators confirmed that while the playground equipment will be cordoned off behind perimeter construction fencing for five consecutive working days, the surrounding paved walking paths, open turf playfields, and Iron Horse Trail bypass connections will remain entirely accessible to the public throughout construction. Parents and caregivers seeking active play alternatives during the short closure are encouraged to visit nearby recreational facilities at Livorna Park or Rancho Romero School park grounds in adjacent Alamo neighborhoods.
Local families, neighborhood homeowners associations, and regional park visitors can monitor real-time facility status bulletins, safety compliance certificates, and countywide playground improvement schedules online at contracosta.ca.gov/facilities. Questions regarding park operations, equipment maintenance, and facility reservations may be submitted to the Contra Costa County Parks Maintenance operations center Monday through Friday at (925) 313-7000. Construction is expected to conclude before the first weekend of November.
