Joint-facilities managers from Contra Costa County Public Works Special Districts and the Town of Danville reopened the renovated one-acre off-leash canine paddocks on Saturday evening at Hap Magee Ranch Park at 1025 La Gonda Way on the Alamo-Danville border. Co-managed since 1994 through a joint powers agreement between Contra Costa County Service Area R-7A (Alamo) and the Town of Danville on historic cattle ranchland donated by developer Hap Magee, the dog park welcomes more than 400 daily dogs and owners along the Iron Horse Regional Trail corridor.

To eliminate winter mud holes and dust clouds in both the large-dog paddock (over 25 pounds) and the small-and-timid-dog enclosure, landscape contractors excavated eight inches of compacted soil, laid a crushed-granite flushing sub-base connected to bio-filtration swales, and installed 28,000 square feet of flow-through antimicrobial K9 synthetic turf cooled with organic zeolite infill. Double-gated stainless-steel bullpen airlocks prevent off-leash escapes when families enter from the La Gonda Way parking lot.

Inside the main run, crews anchored a six-station canine agility circuit featuring non-slip rubberized A-frame ramps, weave poles, pause tables, and shaded HDPE tunnels. Outside the exit gate, a cedar-screened solar-thermal paw-and-coat wash bay provides two stainless-steel grooming tubs with warm 85-degree low-pressure sprayers and freeze-proof dual-height hydration fountains for pets and walkers.

The $310,000 off-leash park renovation grant was split equally between Alamo CSA R-7A park reserves and the Town of Danville Capital Improvement Program. Local dog owners can review weekly paddock grooming and maintenance schedules on the Alamo Parks and Recreation Official Portal.
